Project Leaders
Project coordinator & dancer:
Gabrielle Barnett, based Girdwood, Alaska.
Gabrielle Barnett first studied contact improvisation with Karen Nelson
and KJ Holmes in the late 1980s. She began working with place-based
research, writing, and activism in the 1990s, earning a doctorate in
Performance Studies from New York University. She has collaborated on
numerous performance projects in the Anchorage area, ranging from children's
theater to experimental performance art. Her movement training includes
modern, west African, and Afro-Carribean dance, as well as contact improvisation.
She teaches at the University of Alaska, Anchorage for both the Liberal
Studies and Theatre and Dance programs.
Artist-in-residence, dancer & documentation
coordinator: Tinu Hettich, based Berne, Switzerland.
Tinu Hettich has worked with contact improvisation, videography and
martial arts since 1990. He teaches CI and participates in movement
projects internationally. His formative teachers were Peter Aerni, Patrick
Collaud and Nancy Stark Smith.
Together with Peter Aerni he runs Atelier
FreiForm, a space for image and movement in Berne. He is part of
the organizing team of the international CI
jam in Berne and the European Underscore Research Group.
Project partner in Russia : Caroline Waters,
based Brighton, UK.
Caroline Waters has organized many International Improvisation events,
including ECITE, and is an Artistic Director of Contact Moscow. She
has performed at countless International Improvisation Festivals across
Europe and America. She was an Associate Lecturer at Dartington College
of Arts, UK from 1996-2007 and has taught as a visitor in Colleges in
Holland, Belgium, Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, Slovenia and the USA.
Mainly drawing from Contact Improvisation and New Dance practices, she
teaches, performs and directs in situations ranging from performance
to therapy. Caroline continues to develop her own body of work internationally
as a freelance improviser in performance, as a dancer, teacher and musician.

John Bainbridge: based Durham, North Carolina.
John Bainbridge started his practice of Contact Improvisation in 1990
with Teri Carter at the University of Oregon and has been devoted ever
since. He currently co-facilitates the weekly C.I. jam in Durham, North
Carolina and hosts a C.I. photography web page: http://ci.baynbrigge.com
